Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto (Kyoto, Uji and Otsu Cities) (UNESCO/NHK)
Built in A.D. 794 on the model of the capitals of ancient China, Kyoto was the imperial capital of Japan from its foundation until the middle of the 19th century. As the centre of Japanese culture for more than 1,000 years, Kyoto illustrates the development of Japanese wooden architecture, particularly religious architecture, and the art of Japanese gardens, which has influenced landscape gardening the world over.

Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto - UNESCO World Heritage Site
The Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto is an incredible UNESCO World Heritage Site in Japan. Located in Kyoto, the cultural and spiritual heart of Japan, this site covers a number of shrines, temples and pavilions across the ancient city. For our visit, we focused our attention on some of the most important spots: the amazing Kinkaku-ji, Temple of the Golden Pavilion, one of the most famous temples in Japan. Ryoan-ji, Temple of the Dragon at Peace, with its remarkable and tranquil rock garden. And of course, Tenryu-ji, the famous temple with its beautiful pond. Enjoy!

Starting in Kyoto, Japan, we take a look at the Machiya homes, a traditionally crafted wooden townhouse before moving onto the floating homes of IJburg in the Netherlands.
